Press Cuttings

This page lists press cuttings and other articles from the international media. Press releases from International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) are re-published across many different sailing websites, syndication services and email newsletters, reaching thousands of readers around the world.

We're also pleased that the mainstream local and national press are begining to take an interest and reporting on progress with our Olympic campaign.

“Lucy Macgregor has secured the final spot in the semi-finals of the ISAF Nations Cup in Brazil to mark a turn in fortunes after having her hired car broken into and her sailing shoes, gloves and watches stolen.”

The Telegraph, 27th March 2009

“Lucy Macgregor's (GBR) progress through the Women's repechage was less of a surprise. The British skipper is the reigning European Champion and holds a world #3 ranking. She swept past the challenge of Nicky Souter (AUS), Juliana Senfft (BRA) and Rita Concalves (POR) to win the repechage on a 3-0 record. Macgregor joins Anna Tunnicliffe (USA), Giulia Conti (ITA) and Claire Leroy (FRA) in the semi finals.

As winners of the round robin stage, Tunnicliffe was able to choose their opponents in the semi-final. Tunnicliffe, Olympic gold medallist at Beijing in the Laser Radial dinghy, opted to face the French team of Leroy who are the reigning World Champions and also the defenders of the Nations Cup. Conti will line up against Macgregor.”

“Italy were the only team to defeat the Americans in the round robin, and led by skipper Conti they completed a solid series to finish second in the round robin on a 6-2 scoreline. This left Claire Leroy and the British team of Lucy Macgregor to fight it out for the last of the semi-final places. Despite her early setback against Anna Tunnicliffe, Leroy showed why she has been the world’s #1 ranked women’s match racer for over three years with a victory in the decisive race. Leroy grabbed a small advantage just before the start and from there repelled every effort the Brits made to get past, scoring victory and securing a semi-final place ahead of Macgregor on countback.

Joining Macgregor and the British team in the repechage are Nicky Souter (AUS), Rita Goncalves (POR) and Juliana Senfft (BRA). The young Brazilian skipper delighted the home supporters by earning the final place in the repechage at the expense of world #4 ranked skipper Lotte Meldgaard Pedersen and the team from Denmark.”

“After the opening 24 matches of the women’s round robin, there is a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard. The teams of Giulia Conti (ITA), Anna Tunnicliffe (USA) and Lucy Macgregor (GBR) all recorded four wins and one loss on the opening day. Women’s match racing joins the Olympic programme for the first time at the 2012 London Games and it’s interesting to note all three of these skippers actively campaigned for the Beijing Games.”
