Press Cuttings

This page lists press cuttings and other articles from the international media. Press releases from International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) are re-published across many different sailing websites, syndication services and email newsletters, reaching thousands of readers around the world.

We're also pleased that the mainstream local and national press are begining to take an interest and reporting on progress with our Olympic campaign.

“The Women's entry is perhaps the strongest ever assembled in the Nations Cup. [Claire] Leroy has proven herself a formidable competitor, but even she will have her work cut out to defend the title she won three years ago. Lucy Macgregor of Great Britain is the reigning European Champion and the form sailor on the women's circuit having made major strides up the rankings to her current position at #3. Denmark's Lotte Meldgaard Pedersen is right behind Macgregor in the rankings at #4 and also on top of her game having won the first Women's Match Racing event of the ISAF Sailing World Cup at the Rolex Miami OCR in January. Nicole Souter of Australia is another top 10 ranked competitor set to line up in Brazil.

Another star performer is Beijing Olympic gold medallist Anna Tunnicliffe of the USA. Tunnicliffe won gold in the one person Laser Radial dinghy, but is also a highly skilled match racer, having won the US national title last year. Another Olympian joining the line up in Brazil is Italy's Giulia Conti. Conti is a former world #1 in the Women's 470 Rankings who also has a strong match racing background and she recently finished an impressive second at the World Cup event in Miami. Completing the women's line up are Rita Goncalves of Portugal, Ayesha Lobo of India and Argentina's Cecilia Ruiz Bartlett.”

“Lucy Macgregor's success for Britain offers Olympic hope in women's match racing class.

European Women's Match Racing Champion in 2008, Macgregor only broke in to the world top 10 in October last year but her rapid progress, alongside crew Annie Lush and Ally Martin has raised hopes that Britain has added another medal prospect to their talented squad.”

The Telegraph, 11th March 2009

“Lucy Macgregor carried on from where she left off following her recent Miami medal joy by claiming victory at the first RYA Olympic Classes Women’s Match Racing qualifier at Queen Mary SC last weekend (7-8 March).

Following the ratification of Women’s Match Racing as an Olympic Classes event for London 2012, the RYA invited teams keen on embarking on 2012 campaigns to take part in a series of qualifying events over the course of this season to identify boats to receive Skandia Team GBR support for forthcoming international Olympic Classes Regattas both this season and towards the London Games.

With Women’s Match Racing first introduced as an Olympic Classes discipline at January’s Rolex Miami Regatta, Macgregor, sailing with Annie Lush and Ally Martin, enjoyed a successful trip to the States returning home with a bronze medal and as the top ranked British outfit.

And the Poole-based skipper ensured she once again claimed the bragging rights over her fellow Brits by taking first spot at the first of the RYA’s seven qualifying events scheduled for this summer at Queen Mary.”

Royal Yachting Association, 10th March 2009

“We speak to Olympic women's match racer Lucy Macgregor about her campaign, and how they won't be going to Palma or Hyeres [the ISAF World Cup events have been cancelled].

At least Macgregor seems to have got off to a good start with her Olympic campaign, even if the discipline she sails in hasn't.”

“The 12 Top Teams in the World are Invited to ISAF Women’s Match Racing World Championship in Lysekil during Lysekil Women’s Match, 27 July – 1 August.

With women’s match racing on the Olympic programme for the first time at the London Games in 2012, the World Championships this summer in Lysekil, on the west coast of Sweden, will be a key event in the sailing world. The world’s top teams will battle for the World Champion title and the biggest prize money in women’s match racing, 50,000 Euro, during the fifth edition of Lysekil Women’s Match, previously a world cup race.

Today, the invites to the prestigious event will be sent out to the top 12 teams in the world. The skippers will be invited according to the 'ISAF World Match Race Ranking list', which was updated yesterday, March 4. The ruling World Champion and moreover number one on the ranking list, Claire Leroy, will be invited along with the 10 following skippers on the ranking list. The last spot will be awarded by the Swedish Sailing Federation and the organising yacht club Lysekil Yacht Club Gullmar.

Briton Lucy Macgregor, is definitely the top rookie among the invited skippers. Macgregor, who previously was crew on several successful teams, has as skipper climbed the ranking list at impressive speed and is now ranked third on the world ranking. Macgregor will be a name to watch out for, especially keeping the 2012 Olympics at her home nation in mind.”
