What is Match Racing?

Match race sailing is easy to follow — there is only one winner!

A match race is an exciting, strategic and tactical race consisting of two identical boats racing around a two lap course. Using a mixture of boat handling and the winds and currents available the boats battle to gain control of the other boat and therefore, the race.

There is nothing like wining an event on home waters. With the sailing competition for the London 2012 Olympic Games being held from The Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy, just 40 minutes away from Lucy’s home club The Poole Yacht Club, this campaign is the chance of a life time.

The boats selected for the Women’s Match Race competition are the New Zealand designed, Elliott 6m. These three person, symmetrical spinnaker boats will require excellent team work and high fitness levels giving crews a thrilling challenge while campaigning them through to London 2012.
