• Match Racing Campaign for the Olympics in 2012

The GBR Match Race Girls are one of the top International Women's Match Racing Teams and are determined to represent Great Britain in this exciting new Olympic sailing discipline in 2012. Having gained National and European championship titles, and rapidly risen through the ranks to lead the World Rankings, Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Kate Macgregor are a promising prospect for the future of British Sailing.

Since learning to sail in Poole Harbour as children, Lucy and Annie have always been a driven individuals. After a successful youth sailing career for Lucy, and gaining 'blues' in three sports at Cambridge University for Annie, they both entered a full-time Olympic campaign with Shirley Robertson for Beijing 2008. In 2009 Lucy and Annie launched their own campaign for Gold in 2012, in the new discipline of Match Racing. They are now joined by Lucy's younger sister Kate, who is herself a top crew in her own right.

A slow start to racing on day one of the Euros

Thursday 6th August, 2009

After six long hours of waiting for wind to start racing here in Middelfart, the race committee were finally able to start racing at 16.30 and continued racing until 20.00 unfortunately fitting in just 5 flights. Although our group was racing first we only sailed one race today against fellow Brit Katie Archer’s team. Although she had the initial advantage as we were late to start, by the top mark we had taken the lead and despite the tricky shifty breeze were able to remain ahead to post our first win.

Tomorrow we’re expecting slightly more breeze so although we’re off for the first match, hopefully we’ll get a full day of racing in and be able to catch up today’s missed flights.

We’ll keep you posted!

Defending our title at the European Championships

Wednesday 5th August, 2009

After arriving home from the World Championships Sunday evening, Annie, Ally and I have had no time to catch breath. We were sailing at Cowes Week on Monday and Tuesday, before arriving in Middelfart, Denmark today for the European Championships.

Joining us for this week are both my sisters, Nicky and Kate (poor Ally and Annie!) as the boats we’ll be sailing are Match 28s which are designed to be a smaller version of the DS37s we were sailing last week but from our 2 hour practice today I can assure you they aren’t nearly as fun! We had a good practice today though, albeit brief we learnt a fair bit about the boats and are hoping to hit the ground running tomorrow to defend our title!

The club has put a huge amount of effort into this event, not only are there 16 womens teams but also 16 mens team competing on a different course and in different boats. We are in two groups for the first round robin with the first four of each group advancing through to the quarter finals. Racing starts at 10am tomorrow and we’re on the second flight so keep your fingers crossed for us!

Australia win the title.

Saturday 1st August, 2009

Nicky Souter and her Australian team beat the home hero Marie Bjorling 3-0 today to win the World Championships in a very busy, sunny Lysekil. Hundreds of spectators lined the rocks and bay to watch the racing in somewhat different conditions to yesterday!

In the semi finals both series went to 4 matches with Souter beating Leroy 3-1 and in the battle of the Swedish Bjorling beat Kjellberg 3-1 and after a break for lunch it was Souter on form in the finals and Anna Kjellberg with the edge in the petite final beating defending champion Claire Leroy 2-0.

Our 9th/10th playoff was raced at the beginning of the day against Linda Rahm. After a good start we led the first lap well but were then caught up on the second up wind and final downwind. A solid defending position however gave us a clear gybe to the bias end of the finish line and take the win.

Its been a tough regatta for us where just one more win could have made such a massive difference but we’ve used the event well to learn for the long run and we’re certainly looking forward to the European Championships next week!

Racing postponed on day four.

Friday 31st July, 2009

Yesterdays 3 races to finish the opening round robin were must wins for us in order to get through to the top 6 quarter final round robin, unfortunately after winning against Hahlbrock (GER), we were on the back foot against Spithill (AUS) and in the 15knot breeze were not then able to pass. Our final win against Meldgaard (DEN) put us on to 5 wins and tied with 3 other teams but when the tie is brokenĀ it unfortunately puts us 9th overall in the round robin.

Today the programme is to sail the quarter finals and then our playoffs but the current conditions outside are about 35knots and horizontal rain so it currently looks like we could be spending the day onshore!

Through to the quarter finals are Leroy (FRA), Bjorlling (SWE), Kjellberg (SWE), Souter (AUS), Spithill (AUS), Ulrikkeholm (DEN)

Update: no racing at all today due to the conditions, so the top four are going straight through to semi-finals and finals tomorrow.
