• Match Racing Campaign for the Olympics in 2012

The GBR Match Race Girls are one of the top International Women's Match Racing Teams and are determined to represent Great Britain in this exciting new Olympic sailing discipline in 2012. Having gained National and European championship titles, and rapidly risen through the ranks to lead the World Rankings, Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Kate Macgregor are a promising prospect for the future of British Sailing.

Since learning to sail in Poole Harbour as children, Lucy and Annie have always been a driven individuals. After a successful youth sailing career for Lucy, and gaining 'blues' in three sports at Cambridge University for Annie, they both entered a full-time Olympic campaign with Shirley Robertson for Beijing 2008. In 2009 Lucy and Annie launched their own campaign for Gold in 2012, in the new discipline of Match Racing. They are now joined by Lucy's younger sister Kate, who is herself a top crew in her own right.

Match Cup Sweden

Tuesday 30th June, 2009

With racing starting tomorrow morning for us at the Match Cup Sweden grade 1 event in Marstrand we are just waiting to go out for our practice session and getting settled in to the boat and as a team.

Joining Ally and I this week is Vicky Lenz (main), Mary Rook (trim), Lauren Martel (pit) and Bird Watson (mast). The forecast is looking fairly light all week and they have quite a full schedule with the boys racing too, but it’s a great opportunity for us training for the Worlds.

In the women’s event we have a small but good quality fleet comprising of Leroy, Rahm, Barkow, Meldegaard Pedersen, Spithill, Kjelleberg, Souter and ourselves. Racing starts for us tomorrow morning so we’ll keep you posted on how we go.

Next stop Sweden

Friday 26th June, 2009

The finals of Kiel Week were raced on Wednesday and although we were disappointed not to be sailing, it was a good chance to watch some racing and more detailed sailing of the boats. The finals ended up an all Australian affair with Spithill finally beating Souter 3-2 and Bossard’s French team taking 3rd.

Next stop for us is now Match Cup Sweden on Tuesday where we’ll be racing the DS37s. These are the same boats as will be used for the World Championships at the end of July so it will be a good reference for us against the fleet. The event is also held at the same time as the men’s event so we look forward to watch their racing take place. Racing begins on Wednesday.

5th overall in Kiel

Wednesday 24th June, 2009

Yesterday we had the quarter finals of Kieler Woche which they ran as an 8 boat round robin. Unfortunately we were not on top form and ended up in a four-way tie for the last place to go through to the semis. Winning against the wrong people meant we didn’t quite make the cut, and so had our 5th/6th play-off against the American team helmed by Genny Tulloch which we went on to win 2–0. It’s a disappointing result for us in the end but the first event in the Elliotts was always going to be a slightly odd one!

Just off now to watch the semis — Spithill vs Bossard and Souter vs Groeneveld

Kieler Woche — Day 3

Monday 22nd June, 2009

Today brought more light winds, and it took the entire day to complete the repechage stages to determine the final two teams who will compete in the quarter finals. Having already qualified for the quarters by winning the first round robin group, this unfortunately means we didn’t sail at all today.

Julie Bossard (FRA) and Katie Spithill (AUS) won their respective repechage today to join ourselves, Nicky Souter (AUS), Paula Lewin (BER), Renee Groeneveld (NED), Silke Hahlbrock (GER) and Genny Tulloch (USA) to form the final eight.

So we’re hoping for some more breeze tomorrow and look forward to being out on the water again and getting stuck in to the quarter finals!

Meanwhile, check out photos of the new boats in the gallery linked below…
