Day 1 goes to plan in Hyeres

Sunday 25th April, 2010

Despite most of the fleets not getting any racing in today due to a lack of wind, the match racing course managed to keep to schedule with a course close into the marina entrance. For the first round of racing we are in group B so we had a relaxed morning then swapped into the boats on the fourth flight of the day to complete our groups first four flights.

With the two Chinese teams unable to make it because of the travel disruptions, our group only has seven teams in so we had a bye to begin with, and a chance to settle into the boat and watch our competitors racing. By the time of our first race the breeze was still light but starting to clock round to the right. With port entries all day and less than 5 knots for each one, our timing was crucial from the warning signal in case we never got round from the left hand side.

In our first race against the Swedish team we crossed low on entry and as the faster boat, were in control in pre start which led to a great start and being eight lengths ahead by the windward mark, a lead which we maintained throughout the race to take our first win.

Our second race of the day started in the sea breeze direction but was still maximum 6 knots throughout. Lining up against the other British team we were being controlled until about 2 minutes to go then both ended up at the start line very early and over the line by the time the gun went. A race back behind the line saw us come out slightly bow forward and to leeward, a position we were able to squeeze them off from. The two of us ‘bounced’ off each other up the first beat and it ended up with us ducking them at the windward mark and just finding space between them and the mark to slide round ahead and extend down the run. The breeze was still very fickle but we were able to extend our lead and take another win.

For our final race of the day we were against one of the four French teams entered in the event. Our entry was once again strong and after crossing and a circle to set-up, we were able to create a port, starboard situation from which they received a penalty. With a good start to back that up, we had a fairly low stress race to finish the day with 3 wins out of 3 and glad to have got some racing in!

Tomorrow our group will sail first to finish the final three races in the round robin. Still left to race we have a French, American and Australian team. Hoping to make the top two… we’ll let you know hoe it goes!

Finished with a fourth.

A slightly disappointing finish for us today at the Princess Sofia OCR, loosing the petite finals 1-2 to Sally Barkow’s crew, but another solid result overall to be pleased with.

After waiting on the water for breeze for a couple of hours, it filled in to about 7knots but quite choppy for our best of three series which led to some close racing. We lost the first race on a slight shift up the first beat and were never able to regain the lead however another wining start in the second race put us ahead and although under pressure right up to the line, we took the win and so were one a piece going into the final race. Another winning start just gave us control however the American’s held the right hand side and we were never quite able to get rid of them before the top mark. We seemed a little slow on the first part of the first run and struggled to put them under pressure enough so unfortunately couldn’t make up the difference before the end. It was tricky racing today and most of the week and Ally, Annie and I are certainly looking forward to a day off!….We may have to wait until Sunday though because we’ll be loading our boats into the container here tomorrow.

In the final it went to four races with the Dutch team taking the win in the end looking like they were sailing the boat really well in the conditions as did Barkow’s team against us. Plenty to improve on still so looking forward to Hyeres our next event!

Back to training in Weymouth on Tuesday, hope its not too cold back home!

Princess Sofia OCR — Day 5

Thursday 1st April, 2010

Uncooperative winds have meant that the GBR Match Race Girls have been putting in some very long days on the water, so there has been little time for getting online and posting updates.

Yesterday the Gold fleet round robin, comprising of the top six placed teams, was completed with the girls defeating Meldgaard (DEN) and Spithill (AUS) to finish with three wins out of five, tied alongside Barkow (USA) and Groeneveld (NED). The two winners from the Repechage round robin, Hahlbrock (GER) and Souter (AUS), join the gold fleet to form the final two quarter finalists.

This morning the quarter finals have been sailed, with the GBR Match Race Girls dispatching Spithill 3–0. The semi-finals will hopefully be completed this afternoon, before the final day of competition tomorrow.

Follow the action via the twitter feed or on the Trofeo Princesa Sofia event website.

Update — by text message this evening: “Long, shifty, frustrating day. Won quarters 3–0 but lost to Nicky Souter 1–3 in semis. Led 1st 3 matches but v light, 50 degree shifts. Petit finals tomorrow against Sally Barkow.”

Crazy day!

Tuesday 30th March, 2010

The breeze had turned light and very shifty by the time our group started racing today, with the race course tucked in close to the shore as possible this meant three laps and crazy, close racing!

We’re frustrated after many penalties for and against to have lost two and won one race but I have to say it was pretty exciting fun racing!

We should complete the gold fleet round robin tomorrow and then possibly go into quarter finals depending on timing.

More tomorrow…
