Off to Holland

Sunday 24th May, 2009

After the decision was made to replace the Yngling class with Match Racing last year, I have to admit I didn’t think I’d be getting in a Yngling again too soon…How wrong I was!

The first event the Elliott 6s are due to arrive for is Kiel next month and therefore the decision was made to run the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Holland next week in Ynglings. For the last two weeks we have therefore been training in Ynglings in Poole. Although Annie has remained in the middle trimming, with me moving from bow to helm since 2007 and Ally never having set foot in a Yngling before, the training has been very useful not only to get used to sailing these boats but also to continue getting used to match racing with just three crew, not something done much on the current circuit.

The Delta Lloyd Regatta will be the second time the new Olympic discipline match racing will join the other classes in an ISAF World Sailing Cup event. This will be my fourth visit to Medemblik having been once in a Mirror, once in a 470 and last time in the Yngling. We are expecting a good entry this year and Annie, Ally and I are looking forward to racing together again. We’ll keep you posted with how it goes!

Enjoy the sun!

Champagne sailing conditions for training in Lymington.

Friday 1st May, 2009

During the last two weeks we’ve had fantastic sailing conditions for our training in Lymington. Sailing against Mary Rook, Annie, Ally and I have had some really productive hours on the water bringing along specialists to help us train in particular areas.

We’ll continue training from Poole over the next few weeks before our next event at the end of May, the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Holland. This will be the second time Match Racing will join in the ISAF World Cup Series but with the Elliott boats not arriving until June we’ll be back in Ynglings for the week, I’ll need to dig out my hikers!

Thanks to Lynx Sport Management for the use of their SB3s over the last two weeks, Jenkins Marine, and everyone for your support.

Training in Poole

Wednesday 11th February, 2009

The next few weeks we’ll be braving it out on the freezing cold Poole Harbour to prepare for our next event, the ISAF Nations Cup Grand Final.

The ISAF Nations Cup is a global competition to find the world’s top match racing nation, and to develop match racing infrastructure around the world. This year the event will take place in Porto Alegre, Brazil, from the 23rd–28th March. Our team for the event will be Annie, Ally, Mary Rook and myself and we’ll be racing in J24 class yachts. Luckily we have some club members at Parkstone Yacht Club helping out by allowing us to train in their boats in the lead up to the event. Thank you to them!

Our training will consist of some boat handling in the J24s, getting used to the quickest way of sailing around the course, how they handle under slow speed and also perhaps most importantly, some match racing against some of the male match race teams in the country. Having competed at the J24 World Championships in Sardinia last year with Annie and Mary we already have good knowledge of racing the boats, although match racing them with 4 crew will be a little different to our fleet racing with 6 crew then (yes it was VERY cramped!).

Bring on March! Lucy x

Training in Miami

Tuesday 20th January, 2009

Annie, Ally and I have now finished our first two days training in Miami preparing for the Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta next week. Glamour had to be the word of the day with sun and wind of about 18 knots we planed our way around Miami Bay in the SB3….trying to force ourselves to do some match race training as well!

Later this week we will take part in a Match Race clinic along with 5 other teams. Racing starts next Monday.
